#BLACKGIRLMAGIC BOSSES CELEBRATED AT SALLY BEAUTY

What do you call a circle created for 4 Black women in beauty that are Hollywood celebrity stars or haircare moguls disrupting the industry?

Answer:  A #BlackGirlMagic Roundtable Party to celebrate Black History & Black Future baby!

And that’s exactly what we did!

I had the incredible honor of being a part of the Sally Beauty Founder x Founder Roundtable for Black History Month 2022. This amazing panel of founders also included Taraji P. Henson (TPH By Taraji), Gabrielle Union & Larry Sims (Flawless By Gabrielle Union), Monique Rodriguez (Mielle Organics) and Maya Smith (The Doux).

This chat was powerful, it was lit, & it’s all the reason why Black women across the nation can feel good when shopping at Sally Beauty…because we’re all up in the spot doing the damn thang…representing for our textured hair, melanin-poppin True + Pure SISTAS!

In partnering with Sally Beauty - True + Pure Texture is THE 1ST BLACK WOMAN OWNED NATURAL HAIR EXTENSIONS EVER OFFERED BY A NATIONAL RETAILER!!!

So it was a pleasure speaking truth and power to all things Black & Beautiful during the Sally Beauty Founder x Founder Roundtable. Here’s a link to watch this great event and some of my highlight responses.

What was your “Why” for launching your brand?

My why is really about SELF LOVE! Really wanting to create something that spoke to who we were and an expansion for who we are.

I’m a hairstylist and have been for over 20 years. 70% of the world has textured hair.  Yet we’re the most underserved in the beauty industry. As I thought about the textured hair offerings , there were so many gaps in regards to texture match.

So the reason why I say it’s self love is whenever we have more of who we are, we really find love in that – and it says that we’re more than enough.

What is one of your greatest business lessons?

I’ve learned to take out the word “Winning.” Because if you’re winning, then you or someone else could be losing. I just try to take everything that has happened as a learning lesson, and opportunity for elevating. I’ve learned to change that paradigm, so that there is no winning or losing. You can only learn or elevate.

Tell us about your experience bringing your brand into Sally Beauty?

I came into Sally Beauty as a part of a co-hort. It’s been a great opportunity to service so many underserved women as it relates to textured hair. What a great time that we’re in where there’s so much room for Black brand owners to amplify the message that TEXURE IS THE APEX!

It’s very fitting to partner with Sally Beauty, because they have always been a part of my journey growing up. We’d go to Sally Beauty to pick up our supplies to do our hair because we could not afford to go to the salon. That’s why this is so fitting for us to create another access point to service the textured hair Sally Beauty customer.

What is your advice for someone who is considering starting a venture in the beauty industry?

There’s always a need for re-centering. When you lose your source, which is God, you lose yourself. Make sure you keep that balance and understanding that just because we can do many things, we may not be able to do many things at once.

As a creative that can be very challenging to say “hey…focus right here.” But it’s really about self-care and not losing yourself in the process, and just really keeping connected to the source so you can still show up as your best self every day.
